Teradyne Announces Partnership for In-line Board Handling

ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA -- February 23, 1999 -- Teradyne, Inc. (NYSE:TER) has announced an important partnership with a leading automation manufacturer that will expand the capabilities of Teradyne's Spectrum™ Manufacturing Test Platform for in-line test. The board handler partnership is with Pematech Rohwedder Inc. of Goleta, California and was announced at the test trade show NEPCON West held here February 23-25, 1999.

Pematech Rohwedder Inc. (PRW) is a member of the Rohwedder group of companies which have been leaders in the manufacture of automated test and handling systems for the worldwide electronics industry since 1980. Group headquarters are in Markdorf, Germany. Pematech Rohwedder Inc. specializes in providing turnkey automation for in-line testing of printed circuit boards, modules, and completed electronic assemblies.

Pematech Rohwedder and Teradyne have created an integrated board handler test solution using Teradyne's Spectrum VXI card cage inside the PRW Inc. test cell in-line (TCIL) handler. Pematech Rohwedder has designed the handler solution with the repair loop conveyor and pass through conveyor in the lower section of the system, thereby reducing the required floor space. Additionally, PRW Inc. has decreased system cycle time to less than 2 seconds, thus increasing tester utilization. This high speed space-saving solution eliminates the costs associated with the tester frame and vacuum fixturing. This solution has been designed with a high-performance fixture interface that supports in-circuit and/or functional test applications.

Pematech Rohwedder also sells and supports standalone handlers--the TCIL and Turbo Test 2000 horizontal board handler--that interface with Teradyne's Z1800-Series or Spectrum 8800-Series testers.

The standalone handlers are available through Pematech Rohwedder worldwide. The integrated handler with Spectrum is currently available in Europe and will be available by early summer in North America. The price for an in-circuit configuration starts at around $139,000.
