Ericsson Saab Avionics AB Orders New Spectrum VXI Manufacturing Test Platform

Walnut Creek, CA -- June 23,1997 -- Ericsson Saab Avionics AB has ordered a Teradyne SpectrumTM 8800-Series VXI open-architecture manufacturing test platform, one of the first major European electronics OEMs to do so.

Commenting on the order, Lars Strahl, Manager, Production Engineering, of Ericsson Saab Avionics, said, "Spectrum's open architecture, based on industry standards such as VXI, allows us to integrate functional and in-circuit test effectively and easily for the first time. Using it, we plan to move from a test strategy based almost entirely on functional test, to one which uses the most appropriate mix of in-circuit and functional techniques. This will involve installing up to two analog VXI instruments on the Spectrum platform," he explained. "In addition, we will be using Teradyne VictoryTM boundary scan software to automatically generate boundary scan patterns, further enhancing the fault coverage of our in-circuit solution," he added.

Paul Smith, Northern European Sales Manager for Teradyne, commented, "Ericsson Saab Avionics is very much at the leading edge of analog and digital electronic technology with its advanced avionics systems. Here, the flexibility of the Spectrum open architecture is very apparent, in that Ericsson proposes to add additional functionality where required to fully meet their needs, to provide a test solution that is both fully capable and extremely cost effective."

Teradyne's Spectrum 8800 Series is the first board test system built around a fully-integrated VXI system architecture for full-spectrum in-circuit and board functional test. Launched in November 1996, Spectrum has generated orders for approximately 50 test systems to date. Initial customers include Acculogic, AIL Systems, Allen Bradley, Digital, Ford Electronics, Lucent Technologies, Nortel, and Siemens, Spectrian, and Vanso Electronics in North America; Ericsson Saab Avionics, Lucent, Swaptronics, and Carl Zeiss in Europe; and Landrex in Taiwan.

Teradyne is a leading manufacturer of automatic test equipment and connection systems for the electronics and telecommunications industries, with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. The Spectrum 8800-Series systems are produced by the Assembly Test Division in Walnut Creek, California. That division also produces other circuit board test and inspection equipment for the commercial board-test market. Teradyne's site on the World Wide Web is at www.teradyne.com. Teradyne is listed on the New York Stock Exchange (Symbol: TER). Sales in the first quarter of 1997 were approximately $248 million.
