Teradyne Receives $5 Million Order from ManTech for M9-Series Digital Test Instruments for the Marine Corps' Third Echelon Test System (TETS)

SALT LAKE CITY, UT -- August 25, 1998 -- Teradyne, Inc. (NYSE:TER) announced that ManTech Systems Engineering Corporation based in Chantilly, Virginia has placed an order in excess of $5 million for Teradyne's M910 VXI Digital Test Instrument. The functional test hardware will be integrated into the United States Marine Corps' Third Echelon Test System (TETS). TETS systems are mounted on "humvees" to provide portable maintenance and support at the forward edge of the battlefield area.

Teradyne's M910 instrument occupies the lower part of the left chassis in the highly portable TETS unit.

The TETS program is a move towards a new concept in field maintenance for the Marines. Historically, maintenance was provided by pulling a vehicle back to a support area or sending out a contact team with some tools and spare parts. Through TETS, the Marines now have the ability to send a "humvee" equipped with test equipment to get a malfunctioning electronics system back into working order. Active duty Marine units that will employ TETS include: communication squadrons associated with air wings, communication battalions associated with ground forces, electronic maintenance companies, ordnance maintenance companies, and corresponding units in the reserves.

Teradyne provided twelve M910 units to ManTech as part of a previous order for a Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP) build. The TETS units once again proved their reliability in harsh environmental conditions during a Field User Test (FUT) at the Marine Corps base, Camp Lejeune North Carolina. The successful FUT enabled the TETS system to be released into full scale production on schedule.

TETS project officer, Chief Warrant Officer Steven Shrout, managed the FUT at Camp LeJeune. "The FUT was a critical milestone in demonstrating that a COTS test system could survive in a harsh environment. The FUT proved that for automatic test equipment, the Marine Corps has reached a new level with TETS in terms of test capability, reliability, and ruggedness. The TETS acquisition has shown that a system composed of COTS can be used to meet military requirements."

Pete Faulkner, ManTech Vice President and TETS program manager, said, "In order to meet the Marine Corps' program milestones it was necessary to deliver 12 LRIP TETS systems in just 150 days, and working together with Teradyne, ManTech was able to meet this aggressive production schedule. Teradyne has demonstrated their ongoing commitment to the TETS program, and with such strong partnerships we're confident that the TETS program will continue to be successful as we begin the production phase of the contract."

The TETS system consists of two VXI chassis of instrumentation controlled by a ruggedized laptop PC running Windows NT. The TETS system consists of Teradyne's C-size M910 VXI Digital Test Instrument configured with 192 channels, along with a variety of analog and RF instrumentation. In addition to being rugged, the test systems are lightweight for quick and easy transport.
