| Westford,
MA -- June 18, 1999 -- Today, GenRad, Inc. (NYSE:GEN)
introduced CB/Exchange, the newest module of CIMBridge
Optimization Software for electronics manufacturers. CB/Exchange
software allows users to simultaneously upload or download
individual machine programs to surface mount technology
assembly (SMT) equipment, resulting in significant cost
and time savings in production set up for multi-vendor
lines.
Machine Communication (GEM/SECS II)
Historically, manufacturers have relied on the "sneaker
net", the manual loading of individual machine
programs via a floppy or simple FTP transfer to SMT
assembly equipment, often a very time consuming and
costly process. Most new SMT equipment utilizes a GEM/SECS
II interface (Generic Equipment Model/Semiconductor
Equipment Communications standard), providing near "plug-and-play"
communication capability.
CB/Exchange utilizes this standard GEM/SECS II interface
via a network connection, allowing users to download
the correct program to the correct equipment within
seconds, rather than minutes or hours, without leaving
their desk. Data can be managed in one location minimizing
file handling and providing easy access and process
control. Electronics manufacturers can upload and download
programs to heterogeneous, best-in-class manufacturing
equipment, via one interface, without the purchase of
individual and expensive operator’s software kits.
CB/Exchange’s graphical interface also allows
users to simultaneously view up to 10 assembly lines
as well as individual pieces of equipment and their
associated programs.
Availability
CB Exchange will begin shipping in August of 1999
as part of CIMBridge Release 3.6. Further product, feature
