Quay Buys GenRad's GR XStation 3D X-Ray Systems; New Technology Key Part of Quality Strategy

WESTFORD, MA -- October 2, 2001 -- GenRad, Inc. [NYSE: GEN], a global leader in electronics testing and manufacturing solutions, today announced that Quay Corporation has established a new standard for printed circuit assembly testing with a purchase of multiple GR XStation 3DÈ systems, GenRadês next-generation, dual-mode Automated X-Ray Inspection (AXI) platform. The purchase of the new X-Ray systems are part of Quayês on-going strategy to deploy advanced technology products in its manufacturing facility.

Quay is a leading contract manufacturer of high-density printed circuit assemblies, specializing in complex products and new product introductions of leading-edge technologies. The company will deploy the new GenRad GR XStation 3D technology at its Eatontown, NJ, manufacturing facility, where it currently is using multiple GenRad test technologies.

–Incorporating 2D and 3D technology into a single test platform was extremely important to us,” stated George Roessler, Quayês president and chairman of the board. –The GenRad X-Ray systems are an essential part of our whole test and inspection strategy, helping us to deliver a top-quality product to our customers. Also, GenRadês multi-test and inspection philosophy fits perfectly with our strategy. The GR Force/StrategistÈ software will distribute testing across all of our equipment, giving us the best, most cost-effective test possible.”

–We are always trying to incorporate new technologies, new platforms and new ideas to advance all the best practices,” continued Roessler. –We use our multiple testing capabilities as a major selling feature when we talk to customers and prospects. They know we have the capability to test complex designs and deliver quality products.” Quay Corporationês facility includes multiple GenRad test and inspection systems, including GR TestStationÈ in-circuit testers, GR PilotÈ flying probers and X-Ray inspection systems.

–Quayês selection of our X-Ray systems and GR Force/Strategist software is further testament that our product direction is meeting the needs of our customers,” stated Ron Lindell, vice president of GenRadês Process Solutions group. –We are pleased that our hardware and software products are considered paramount to the success of our customers.”

About the GR X-Station

GenRadês new, patented, GR XStation 2D and GR XStation 3D combinational AXI platforms establish a new standard for X-Ray-based imaging products by delivering unprecedented levels of flexibility, image resolution and test-time execution. The GR XStation 3D is unique in that it combines the patented Transmission (2D) AXI technique together with GenRadês patented Digital Tomosynthesis (3D) techniques into a single chassis. GR XStation 3D delivers the superior performance of transmission AXI in conjunction with the superior test access (on double-sided printed circuit assemblies) provided by cross-section AXI. The new GR XStation 3D X-Ray systems offer a testing rate of up to 2.6 square inches per second, with the complementary GR XStation 2D offering testing rates up to 5 square inches per second. The system is available with two set fields-of-view, 0.8 inches or 0.5 inches, to meet specific inspection requirements.

Key features of the new X-Ray systems include:

  • Industry-leading throughput
  • Industry-leading image resolution
  • Advanced X-Ray tube technology, and high-speed optics, providing higher quality imaging and lower maintenance costs
  • All 32-bit architecture
  • GR ForceÈ/A3 (formerly GR Alchemist IIIÈ), GenRadês general purpose integrated software package with an all-new board viewer
  • Easy-to-use Graphical User Interface (GUI)
  • SMEMA compatible auto-width conveyor handling system
  • Capable of inspecting boards up to 18 inches x 22 inches
  • Minimal footprint of less than 5 feet x 10 feet (including staging conveyor systems)
  • Worldwide support and training included.

GR Force/Strategist

GR Force/Strategist is a unique decision-making software tool that determines the optimal test and inspection strategy for electronics manufacturers. The software analyzes the design of each printed circuit assembly, models the production line configuration, and then determines the optimum strategy for the programming of the test and inspection equipment. Operating under Microsoft® Windows, the software gives manufacturers the capability to develop multiple strategies that maximize fault coverage and inspection efficiencies, while improving time to market and time to volume.

Best practice test strategies are developed to ensure that fault coverage and throughput are optimized for the application. GR Force/Strategist is unique in the marketplace with its open architecture that allows the modeling and programming of GenRad and non-GenRad test and inspection equipment.
