IPC Global Crossing Deploys Multiple GenRad Platforms; Distributed Test Part of Quality Assurance Program

Westford, MA -- October 22, 2001 -- GenRad, Inc. [NYSE: GEN], a global leader in electronics testing and manufacturing solutions, today announced that IPC Global Crossing has implemented multiple GenRad test platforms as part of its drive to significantly improve first-time yields and manufacturing efficiency. In 2001, the company has installed a GenRad GR TestStationÈ in-circuit test system, a GR PilotÈ flying prober and a manual X-Ray inspection (MXI) system.

IPCês Service and Solutions Center of Westbrook, CT (a subsidiary of Global Crossing) is the manufacturing and systems integration arm of IPC Trading Systems - they have over 30 years of experience designing, manufacturing, installing and servicing specialized telecommunications equipment for the global financial community. As part of the companyês continual efforts to improve their manufacturing processes, they instituted a multi-platform testing approach that gives them greater prototype test capabilities, significantly enhanced test coverage and increased throughput.

–The equipment we manufacture is mission critical and canêt fail in the field”, stated Pete Simms, vice president of Global Crossingês Westbrook Services and Solutions Center. –Quality and time to market is vitally important to us À itês the primary reason we employ a multi-platform approach. The GR TestStation, GR Pilot, and MXI system give us the advanced testing and complete coverage needed as we continue to build and install high-complexity products,” said Simms.

–IPC Trading Systems is an excellent example of how our customers are integrating different test technologies in an efficient and cost-effective way,” stated Ron Lindell, vice president of GenRadês Process Solutions group. –GenRadês test systems and distributed test software are the foundation of a strategy that helps electronics manufacturers continuously drive defects out of the manufacturing process.”

About the GR TestStation

GR TestStation™, GenRadês family of in-circuit test system, meets the present and future challenges of printed circuit board manufacturers who must satisfy a demanding marketplace while facing the risks of test equipment obsolescence. Designed to accept any valid combination of current GenRad driver/sensor pincards and optional hardware instruments, GR TestStation continues the GR228X tradition of offering complex combinational test.

GR Pilot

GenRad's GR Pilot has been created to help printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers solve the problem of testing PCB's without needing to build test fixtures or mechanical adapters.

The GR Pilot is ideal for testing prototypes, samples, and small production runs of populated boards with limited access or whenever the cost and time required to build a fixture is not justified. The system utilizes four completely independent flying test probes that test the PCB for shorts, opens, and Resistance, Induction, Capacitance. Additional fixed test probes can be applied, to the underside, to increase test coverage.

GR MXI

GenRad's Manual X-Ray Inspection (MXI) product line provides verification of solder joint quality while offering unsurpassed component and assembly failure analysis and repair verification. GenRad's MXI product line offers the largest selection of MXI models and configurations in the industry. The MXI line of GenRad products provides manufacturers with affordable, full-featured inspection tools.
