Hardware Engineering

Hardware Engineers at Teradyne design and support the world's best state-of-the-art test equipment. Our products range from ultra-dense systems on a module to large, versatile testers that offer the ultimate in speed and precision. We have opportunities for B.S. and M.S. electrical and computer engineers who are interested in product design, development, analysis and support.

Hardware Engineers are involved in the development of:

  • Digital circuits up to hundreds of GHz, in CMOS, ECL, GaAs, and SiGe
  • Analog instrumentation from DC through Audio, Digital Audio, AM/FM, Video, up to RF and microwave

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineers at Teradyne design test systems that integrate state-of-the-art electronics with high precision wafer and chip handling equipment. There are a broad range of opportunities for B.S. and M.S. Mechanical Engineers who are interested in product design, development, analysis and support.

Mechanical Engineers are involved in the development of:

Applications Engineering

Applications plays a key role in Teradyne's pre-sales, post-sales, and product development processes. The variety of activities in these processes involves a diversity of skills that you won't find in any other entry-level opportunity. For instance:

  • Today's ICs are increasingly integrating digital, analog, mixed-signal, and often radio-frequency functions all on one chip (often called "system on a chip"). As a result, the broad theoretical and laboratory experience you have gained will be used routinely and expanded over time, including your knowledge of oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, logic analyzers, VNA's, and modulation analyzers.
  • Controlling test instrumentation utilizes the skills you have built up in your labs as well as programming tools like "C", X windows, GUI's and Simulation.
  • You will be involved in customer situations that require tact and a sensitivity to the economics of the industry, customer problems, and cultural issues of our worldwide business.
  • You will be asked to stay on top of the rapid changes in IC technology, assess the ramifications of these changes, advocate solutions, and advise on new product development. The desire to work in teams and address groups with your public speaking skills will be encouraged and fostered.

What You Will Do as an Applications Engineer
Applications Engineers have the opportunity to experience a range of activities, which vary week to week and sometimes day to day. These include:

  • Responsible for pre-sale and/or post-sale support of company products/systems.
  • Devise innovative techniques for testing and characterizing leading edge VLSI and AVLSI devices such as Sonet, xDSL, Converters, RFCommunications, DSP, Wireless LAN, Ethernet, Memory and Microprocessors
  • Write and debug test programs in C/Visual Basic to solve customer's test problem for mixed-signal, logic, and memory applications
  • Design sophisticated analog and digital test interfaces to implement switching, filtering, signal conversion, and other functions
  • Identify trends in customer IC development to help guide the development of new Teradyne ATE instrumentation
  • Provides software/hardware development and consultation
  • Building application solutions based on customer requirements enhancing the product performance allowing it to become the platform of choice (design-ins).
  • More senior levels may provide recommendations/inputs into the next generation product development.
  • Work with Sales and Marketing to develop sales and support strategies
  • Provides technical support in sales presentations, product demonstrations and installation of company products to ensure that the system is functioning according to specifications.
  • Develop competitive benchmarks to differentiate us from the competition Attend trade shows as a technical representative.
  • Write and present technical papers at our professional conference, the Teradyne Users Group
  • Provides answers to customer inquiries concerning system software and applications
  • Develop and teach technical classes and seminars to customers and Teradyne engineers
  • Provides technical expertise and value to customers
  • Reproduce customer problems for software/hardware engineering to correct, and provide interim solutions to keep our customers' production flowing
  • Travel to customer or field office sites to support Design Engineers, Test Engineers, Product Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers. Travel requirements may be 25% or greater.
  • Project management to maintain and oversee the delivery of critical project milestones

Field Applications Engineering

Field Applications Engineers (Test Assistance Group) have the opportunity to experience a range of activities, which vary week to week and sometimes day to day. These include:

  • Devise innovative techniques for testing and characterizing leading edge VLSI and AVLSI devices such as Sonet, xDSL, Converters, RFCommunications, DSP, Wireless LAN, Ethernet, Memory and Microprocessors
  • Design sophisticated analog and digital test interfaces to implement switching, filtering, signal conversion, and other functions

  • Create demonstration development programs and presentations.
  • Identify trends in customer IC development to help guide the development of new Teradyne ATE instrumentation

  • Develop competitive benchmarks to differentiate us from the competition

Manufacturing Engineering

As a Manufacturing Engineer, you will support all facets of production through process development, statistical analysis, ergonomics and equipment design and tooling. Manufacturing engineers work directly with operations, design engineers, and management to:

  • Develop and implement new procedures
  • Improve productivity and quality
  • Humanize production equipment though ergonomic and safety considerations
  • Provide capital equipment investment analysis
  • Conduct capacity planning and analysis

Test Development Engineering

You will be developing the measurement techniques to verify our state-of-the-art instrumentation. To do this, you'll need to develop the hardware, software and processes in conjunction with new instrumentation product development.

Our customers are testing their chips with increasing accuracies. To meet this challenge, Teradyne instrumentation must have higher accuracies. To guarantee our instrumentation, the Test Development Engineer must develop techniques at the highest accuracies available.

You will be given both formal and on the job training to be successful. You'll have a personalized training plan as well as a mentor. As your skills and talents grow, so will the challenges and opportunity. You'll review your career growth and development plan every 6 months.

Business Operations

Planners exercise independent responsibility for material supply by analyzing, reviewing, and recommending action based on MRP (including ordering and rescheduling).

Other responsibilities include working with purchasing to achieve supply chain reliability; ensuring accurate and timely MRP supply information; verifying and implementing Engineering Change Orders (ECO's); analyzing inventory and order exposure levels based on market forecasts; and facilitating timely delivery to a global customer base.

Planners make contributions to the integration of the planning group into operations by providing liaison support to Purchasing, Manufacturing, Test, and Marketing. They exercise considerable independent responsibility and creativity in managing production levels and ensuring acceptable product quality levels. They will also be responsible for managing special projects, generating reports, and providing situational analysis to management.

Planners have many opportunities to implement process improvements and problem resolution skills using Quality Improvement Teams and other Teradyne TQM tools. A strong commitment to Total Quality Management is essential.

Sales Engineering

Sales engineers play a key role in creating and sustaining a long-term relationship between the customer and Teradyne. They are responsible for developing a thorough understanding of the customer's business and technological requirements, and for aligning Teradyne resources with the customer's objectives to obtain mutual success. Individuals should have an MBA, two years of work in a technically-related field, and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, computer science, math, or physics.

Sales engineers will receive a thorough introduction to Teradyne through: training in specific disciplines (Sales, Product, etc.), assignments with various Teradyne organizations, and projects designed to develop an understanding of customer problems and Teradyne solutions.

After training is completed, sales engineers move out into the field. Career opportunities include Sales Management, Product Marketing, and Divisional Management.

Product Manager

Financial Analyst

The FDP (Financial Development Program) consists of three, 6-9 month rotations. The rotations can include opportunities in Corporate Accounting, Internal Audit, Corporate Tax, Treasury and Divisional Finance groups within Teradyne’s major manufacturing divisions. Some of the skills that the FDP Analyst will acquire during the program are budgeting and forecasting, account reconciliations, cost accounting, inter-company accounting, auditing fundamentals, familiarity with various accounting systems, and an understanding of financial statement analysis. Each of the rotations allows the FDP to fully immerse themselves in the divisional and corporate finance roles. In addition there are frequent FDP meetings designed to further develop skills, network and learn about how the company functions outside of the individual rotation. The objective of the program is to develop well-qualified personnel who can fill challenging financial positions with potential to grow within Teradyne’s organization.

ASIC Engineering

ASIC Test Engineer - In this role, you will participate in a self-directed, team environment with senior Test engineers developing test solutions for ASICs used to manufacture Teradyne’s testers. Design & implement ASIC test solutions including interface fixture designs, test program development, and device debug for digital, mixed-signal and RF devices. Perform failure analysis of devices to determine root cause of failures (such as device defects, test inaccuracies, design margin limitations, correlation issues)

Daily assignments may include:

  • Analysis of circuits to determine test methods
  • Measurement of device parametrics using bench instrumentation and/or Automated Test Equipment
  • Test programming, debug of early silicon, test time reduction and yield improvement.
  • Evaluating and verifying the reliability of custom semiconductor devices

ASIC FPGA Verification/Design Engineer – As an ASIC/FPGA design engineer, you will contribute to the architecture, design, and verification of Digital and Mixed Signal devices. We use the latest tools and methodology in developing these designs – Verilog HDL, System C, Synopsys, Synplicity, Hspice analog simulation among others. Our designs are implemented in the latest processes of our vendors, in 0.18 to 0.09 micron technologies.

Assignments may include:

  • Creating specifications
  • Verilog coding
  • Creation of testbenches in verilog, C++ and System C
  • Planning and coding of verification tests
  • Timing closure and physical design
  • Lab debug and design validation
