Applications
Engineers play a key role in Teradyne's pre-sales, post-sales
and product development processes. Because of the tremendous variety
of activities involved and the diversity of skills you will need, this
is an entry-level opportunity like no other you’ll find. Here
are some of the reasons why:
- Today's ICs are increasingly integrating digital, analog, mixed-signal,
and often radio-frequency functions all on one chip (often called
"system on a chip"). As a result, the broad theoretical
and laboratory experience you have gained will be used routinely and
expanded over time, including your knowledge of oscilloscopes, spectrum
analyzers, logic analyzers, VNA's, and modulation analyzers.
- Controlling test instrumentation utilizes the skills you have built
up in your labs as well as programming tools like "C", X
windows, GUIs and Simulation.
- You will be involved in customer situations that require tact and
a sensitivity to the economics of the industry, as well as the cultural
issues of our worldwide business.
- You will be asked to stay on top of the rapid changes in IC technology,
assess the ramifications of these changes, advocate solutions, and
advise on new product development. The desire to work in teams and
address groups with your public speaking skills will be encouraged
and fostered.
What You Will Do as an Applications Engineer
Applications Engineers have the opportunity to experience a
range of activities, which vary week to week and sometimes day to day.
These include:
- Responsibility for pre-sale and/or post-sale support of company
products/systems.
- Devising innovative techniques for testing and characterizing leading
edge VLSI and AVLSI devices such as Sonet, xDSL, Converters, RFCommunications,
DSP, Wireless LAN, Ethernet, Memory and Microprocessors
- Writing and debugging test programs in C/Visual Basic to solve customer's
test problem for mixed-signal, logic and memory applications
- Designing sophisticated analog and digital test interfaces to implement
switching, filtering, signal conversion and other functions
- Identifying trends in customer IC development to help guide the
development of new Teradyne ATE instrumentation
- Providing software/hardware development and consultation
- Building application solutions based on customer requirements, enhance
the product performance to allow it to become the platform of choice
(design-ins).
- At the senior level, providing recommendations/inputs into the next
generation product development.
- Working with Sales and Marketing to develop sales and support strategies
- Providing technical support in sales presentations, product demonstrations
and installation of company products to ensure that the system is
functioning according to specifications.
- Developing competitive benchmarks to differentiate us from the competition
- Attending trade shows as a technical representative.
- Writing and presenting technical papers at our professional conference,
the Teradyne Users Group
- Providing answers to customer inquiries concerning system software
and applications
- Developing and teaching technical classes and seminars to customers
and Teradyne engineers
- Providing technical expertise and value to customers
- Reproducing customer problems for software/hardware engineering
to correct, and provide interim solutions to keep our customers' production
flowing
- Traveling to customer or field office sites to support Design Engineers,
Test Engineers, Product Engineers and Manufacturing Engineers.
- Managing projects and overseeing the delivery of critical project
milestones
