Valence Semiconductor Selects Teradyne for GPS and 802.11a WLAN Testing; Leader in Mixed-Signal Communications uses Catalyst with MicroWAVE6000

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--October 30, 2001--Teradyne, Inc. (NYSE: TER), the world's largest supplier of automatic test equipment and high performance interconnection systems for the electronics industry, announced today that Valence Semiconductor, a global provider of highly integrated solutions for the broadband and mobile connectivity markets, has selected the Catalyst test system with the MicroWAVE6000(TM) instrumentation suite to test GPS (Global Positioning System) and 802.11a WLAN (Wireless Local Area Networking) devices. Both of these chipsets are being implemented in deep sub-micron CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor), offering unprecedented breakthroughs in lowering power consumption.

Fred Tarazi, Vice President of Manufacturing Operations for Valence Semiconductor said, "We selected Teradyne's Catalyst because we achieve the lowest risk in time-to-market and best test economics. The best of both worlds. Teradyne's Catalyst and MicroWAVE6000 offer us complete test coverage for both our GPS and 802.11a devices, and their worldwide support ensures quick test development and deployment to our manufacturing partners. We achieve the test economics not only with the Catalyst's throughput, but also because this system is found at almost all test subcontractors, allowing us great flexibility in where we place volume production."

David Derian, Marketing Manager for Wireless/RF at Teradyne, said, "Valence has devices spanning frequencies from 1GHz to over 5GHz, with differing modulation schemes and architectures. Our MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation suite is DSP-based and fully synchronized with our baseband mixed-signal and digital instrumentation, ensuring that this one system can cover the breadth of their test needs."

About MicroWAVE6000

The MicroWAVE6000 instrumentation suite provides a complete range of RF/microwave test capabilities required for current and future wireless devices and communications standards. MicroWAVE6000 includes full 6 GHz source, measure and vector network analysis (VNA) capability, complete 12-term error correction, and graphical-user interface (GUI) based test templates for programming ease-of-use plus options, including: modulation to 2.7 GHz, up to 16 RF pins, noise figure test option, phase noise test option and frequency hopping.

About Catalyst

Catalyst dominates the SOC market with over 1000 systems shipped. Test capabilities include full coverage for DSL, wireless/RF, networking, and power management applications. With more than 4,000 individual users worldwide, Catalyst's IMAGE programming system is the most widely used ATE software environment. Catalyst offers multi-site testing, providing the best test economics, and the most complete array of analog instrumentation for test coverage and production flexibility. When a mobile phone call is placed, or a PC, printer, scanner, pager, or DVD is utilized, Catalyst tested ICs make it happen and with the lowest cost of test.
